Archaeological finds in the vicinity of Smyadovo speak of continuous life for millennia. The studies that were carried out on the prehistoric mound in the "Golyam Yordan" area reveal the culture of man from 3500-3100 BC. The ten mound necropolises located in the town of Smyadovo are associated with the life of the Thracians from the V-IV centuries BC. Greco-Roman culture is confirmed by the coins found. In order to perpetuate the memory of the soldiers who died during the wars of 1912-1918, a memorial bridge was built in the center of Smyadovo. In 2000, a Thracian tomb was discovered, extremely beautiful and with an impressive facade. It dates from the IV century BC. and is the only one in Bulgaria from this period that has an inscription. In the Smyadovo Municipality, the settlement mounds and fortresses located in the town of Smyadovo, the village of Kalnovo, the village of Yankovo, the village of Veselinovo, the village of Byal Bryag, the village of Zhelad, the village of Cherni vrah and the village of Rish are of interest, which are distinguished by its uniqueness and aspiration to attract numerous tourism lovers.
In 1969, by Decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly, Smyadovo was declared a city, and since 1979 it has been the center of the municipality.
